With standard HTTP POSTS I’ve usually just created a quick dummy html to post data to the server to test, but this time I had to do some research on how to quickly test the services while developing… Just writing it down here so I don’t forget :-)

Minimal HTML5 iPad Offline Cache Test

I just pushed a HTML5 template called “Minimal HTML5 iPad Offline Cache Test” to github:

https://github.com/bjornbjorn/minimal_html5_offline_test

Basically it’s a demo of a simple webpage that can be cached offline on an iPad. It also contains the meta tags required to make it work as a so-called “webclip”, that is you can add it to the homescreen on an iPad and it will open in fullscreen without the URL bar at top and without any other safari elements.

Changes in this blog

It’s probably about time to let my subscribers know that I’ve started blogging over at the AddonBakery Blog – so all posts which relate to my ExpressionEngine Addons will end up there (instead of here).

This blog will be reserved for all non-addon specific ramblings. Who knows, I might also put up a portfolio here.
The “Basecamp Style Subdomains With CodeIgniter” over at NetTuts was tweeted and retweeted all over the place, or maybe just twice, but anyway – this is supereasy in EE, and can be done by adding just a couple of lines to index.php:

What the above snippet of code will do is check if the current URL the user is on is ‘login.example.com’ – if it is it will change the ‘site_url’ variable to override the default one (so that {path=”} etc will use that URL. Also it will make sure the ‘index’ template in the template group called ‘login’ is used (if the user is not on a subpage that is).

SEO Lite v1.1

I just pushed a new version of SEO Lite to github and it has some added goodies, among other things these parameters:

Parameters

url_title; retrieve by url_title (often found as a url segment)

entry_id; retrieve by entry_id

use_last_segment = ‘yes’; pure magic! (it will use the last segment, this is useful if you have the same header all over the website and you sometimes need to use {segment_2} and sometimes {segment_3}

default_title – set the title tag directly (ie. do not get from content) – useful for static pages, main page, etc.

default_description – override the description – same as above

default_keywords – override the keywords – same as above

title_prefix – a string to prefix the title with (per request)

title_postfix – a string to postfix the title with (per request)

title_separator – this will be added after the title (and padded with space on both sides)

Some Usage Examples

Let’s use this template:

SEO Lite – The one calorie SEO addon for ExpressionEngine 2.x

A while back I released DevKit for ExpressionEngine using the module “SEO Lite” as an example.
Sure you could add custom fields for this kind of meta data, but SEO Lite makes it cleaner and easier to use for the client.

SEO Lite is a lightweight addon for ExpressionEngine that adds SEO meta data for title, keywords and description for entries on your site, enabling them to rank better in the search engines.
The GPL discussion is all the rave in the WP community these days. In fact, it has been for a good while and many of largest premium theme providers for WP has already GPL’d their themes – with one notable exception; Chris Pearson, the creator of Thesis, a very popular premium theme. Matt Mullenweg (of WordPress) has criticized this very openly, and it’s now speculated that the only way to solve this is in court.

Introducing DevKit for EE 2.0

I’ve spent the last 8 months developing modules (and templates) for EE 2.0. Pretty early I got annoyed by some of the redundant manual tasks I had to do over and over again .. so I started creating some addons to help me out. Now I’ve bundled (some of that) functionality in this thing I’ve named DevKit for EE 2.0, download it here: zip / github page.

For now it contains functionality to generate the skeleton of a new EE module – you just give it some details (name, description, etc.) and an installable EE 2.0 module will be generated. It will add some helpful functions as well. Then it’s up to you to fill it with business logic ;-)

WooThemes launch of ExpressionEngine themes gets TechCrunch frontpage

Ok, I’m kind of busy these days so I haven’t got time for the most elaborate posts — but anyway, as some of you might know I’ve teamed up with WooThemes to create theme packages for my publishing engine of choice; ExpressionEngine.

Of course, that meant moving the content to a new WordPress install, but also – since my old blog had a handy pagerank of 5 and lots of incoming linkjuice – I needed to redirect all this to my new blog. To make things even more complicated, I had decided to go away from my original link-format of “bie.no/category/second-category/blog-post-title-here” to the shorter “bybjorn.com/10”. Needless to say, I did not want to break existing links. It turned out to be a whole lot easier than expected.

phpODP meets github. lives happily everafter.

A couple of generations ago (at least in “internetz-years”) I wrote a tiny php script called phpODP that would let people put the content of the dmoz directory on their own site. Now, I know what you’re thinking – no dmoz didn’t have a problem with that – they even have a category for sites like that. Anyway, I initially gave it away for free, it turned out to be hugely popular at the time (so much so my blog got hundreds of thousands of backlinks and a PR9 together with CNN and other equally notable sites). At the time, before Google decided to mirror the dmoz content themselves, they actually liked these dmoz-mirror-sites – so no wonder it became popular. Anyway, long story short, I decided to charge $20 for it so I would get less support emails and would actually answer the ones I got.

phpODP

Welcome to the official location for the phpODP script. phpODP is a free script to put the content of the dmoz open directory on your own website. Note, although Google was fine with that back in 2001 today you might be considered duplicate content ;-)

If you’re getting this through my feedburner feed you should note that the new address for my blog is bybjorn.com – check it out, yay!

What I’ve done is used to combined magic of WordPress import, to move my content from bie.no, and Woothemes to get a new look.

Since I’m a freelancer now I figgured I needed a blog, sorta to .. I don’t know, market my services or something. And also, the benefit for you guys, is that since I’m a freelancer now, I might blog a whole lot more (yay!). Or less. We’ll see how it goes.

Scripts

This is a collection of the scripts I’ve published on my blog over the years.

This EE module will import all posts from a SimpleMachines forum to an ExpressionEngine forum. linky.

A simple integration between any webpage and its IPB forum (think “10 latest forum threads”-sidebar in a WordPress blog for instance). linky.

Serendipity (s9y) MT export

Export your s9y blog to a MT (MovableType) formatted file, so that you can import it basically anywhere. Used if you’re moving away from s9y to e.g. EE or WordPress. linky.

How to stop MSN spam with Pidgin

For those of you who don’t know, Pidgin is an open source Instant Message client which supports MSN, ICQ, the jabber protocol (which means GTalk) etc.

After installing it however, I started getting a lot of MSN spam. You know, IM’s from random people telling me to visit places where I could gamble with my money, or alternatively my health (with cheap pills).

Turns out Pidgin defaults to letting everyone contact you.
I already published this on my norwegian blog so I figgured I’d do the english speaking world a favor and publish it here as well in case someone was searching for “Invision Power Board forum bridge” and found the norwegian language one ;-)

There was none, so I decided to create it for myself.

For those of you who don’t know, MT stands for Movable Type and is SixApart‘s blogsystem. It’s a pretty simple plain-text format which many blogsystems (like for instance EE) can do an import from. I used the format description found here.

Download the script here: Serendipity (s9y) MT Export{#p74}

Converting from SMF to ExpressionEngine Forum

This will describe how I converted my norwegian webmaster forum which ran the SimpleMachines forum software to ExpressionEngine with the forum module installed.

The SMF_Import module I’ve created can be used to import both users and forum messages to EE, or just the users if you only want to import these.

Please note that the module you can download here (SMF_Import) is not a full module release, but more like a ‘scratch-an-itch’ plugin I created to solve my specific problem (converting

A look at RegisterFly's Terms & Conditions

After I had problems with RegisterFly a while back, I started looking into their ToC. That is, what I had agreed to when using their service. Without reading it first, of course. I have always wondered what kind of people read the toc of websites before using them ;)

Here are a couple of highlights, my comments are in bold – everything else is a verbatim copy from RegisterFly’s T&C:

If you do a chargeback we will charge you .. a lot more! – We will reinstate your domain name registration solely at our discretion, and subject to our receipt of the initial registration or renewal fee and our then-current reinstatement fee, currently set at $250 USD.

Don’t even think of going on a two week vacation – we may take your domains while you’re relaxing on the beach – You further agree that your failure to respond for over ten (10 ) calendar days to inquiries by Registerfly.com concerning the accuracy of contact details associated with your registration shall constitute a material breach of this Agreement and will be sufficient basis for cancellation of your domain name registration.

And if we decide to do so … – You hereby irrevocably waive any and all claims and causes of action you may have arising from such disclosure or use of your domain name registration and other information by Registerfly.com.

Once we have you, we have you – You agree that you may not transfer your domain name registration to another domain name registrar during the first sixty (60) days from the effective date of your initial domain name registration with Registerfly.com.

Read our ToC every day – You agree to review Registerfly.com’s web site, including the Agreement, periodically to be aware of any such revisions.

We are members of a raving mad, religious sect (or at least it seems so) – YOU AGREE THAT REGISTERFLY.COM WILL NOT BE LIABLE FOR ANY (..); (5) LOSS OR LIABILITY RESULTING FROM ACTS OF GOD. Wow, if an act of God caused me to loose money I think I’d have bigger problems on my mind than RegisterFly.

We can do what we want – Registerfly.com reserves the right to suspend, cancel, transfer or modify your domain name registration or suspend, cancel or modify other services we provide (..)

You should also be aware that if we are sued or threatened with lawsuit in connection with your domain name, we may turn to you to hold us harmless and to indemnify us.

This whole paragraph is also notable:

Skype using port 80!

Argh! Lately I’ve had some problems with my local development server. It just gave me a blank html when accessing localhost .. So, I reinstalled xampp (Apache+PHP+MySQL combo) – found out that didn’t fix anything. Took backup of all my htdocs and mysql data, uninstalled xampp completely (sort of knowing that xampp was messed up). The problem is that it’s pretty fresh, and there is not too much documentation and examples out there yet. So, here’s a list of the stuff I found while searching :)

The Cairngorm wiki @ Adobe is a nice starting point

AboutNico linked me to this great pdf written by Digimmersion – it’s called “Flex Application Design for Cairngorm” and it’s just incredible how difficult this gem is to find using your favorite search engine … thanks Nico!

AboutNico also has a Cairngorm 2.1 sample application

Renaun has a nice Cairngorm store example with support for 4 different backends (ColdFusion Remoting, AMF3, AMFPHP, AMF0). See it live here

The FlexCoders Yahoo! Users Group currently returns almost 4000 posts about ‘cairngorm’ so that might also turn out the be a great resource.

Adobe has a proof-of-concept application called NoteTag – and it uses Cairngorm – “NoteTag is as a reference application for Flex developers building their own large-scale Flex applications. NoteTag consists of several reusable libraries and over 200 source files, so there’s a wealth of detail in the ZIP file in the Requirements section.” — I haven’t checked it out yet, but from the description it looks very promising.

Cairngormdocs.org – this is also a resource which doesn’t show up in Google searches (I stumbled upon it in this presentation from MAX2006). Not too much there yet, but it could turn out to be a good resource as well.

Over at Cairngormdocs they have a nice simple example all called CafeTownsend (hotlink). Download it and give it a spin. Unlike NoteTag this is very easy to setup.

As long as Flex doesn’t start to look and feel just like Swing I’ll be happy .. anyhow, just now I stumbled across this quote on (http://www.bash.org/?top2):

It’s just insane.

This is what happened:

I had a domain that was expiring and I was unable to renew it because their system is buggy as hell. First of all, it had auto-renew enabled, but I still got daily e-mails telling me the domain was expiring and I needed to renew it NOW. Well, trying to do so manually I got a random error message AFTER they had charged my card.

Support never answered (I sent several mails, and waited up to three days before the tickets got auto-closed)

So, finally after trying to renew using PayPal and having spent about $50 in total on this renewal – without getting the domain renewed I decided to do a reversal on the PayPal.

That woke them up

Getting ready for FOTB06

The biggest Flash conference to hit the UK for over 6 years kicks off on Monday! The speaker list is absolutely awesome, with the top designers & developers in the world flying in to speak. Add super swag, a couple of parties and you can see that this is an event not to miss! Don’t miss the opportunity to see the latest cutting edge content, software, news, announcements, to get inspired and the important opportunity to network with other attendees from all over the world. Yes! I’ll be attending Flash on the Beach in Brighton 4-6. December. I’m doing move from Java development to Flash and I think this conference should give me a bit of a push in the right direction ;)

37signal's book now free

This just in; 37signals just released their book called “Getting Real” in html format, free to the masses.

Read it free online here

Have been thinking of buying it for a while, but now I can read a few chapters and see what it’s about.
To my big surprise the top mover (upwards) was something called “Universal Tube & Rollform Equipment Corporation“. I was puzzled until I saw the domain name: utube.com .. haha. lol (yes, a real laughing out loud).

There was a Markdown plugin for b2evo, but it didn’t work with the new plugin API (and the author hadn’t updated the post since 2004) so I decided to make one myself.

For those of you not familiar with the program it’s basically just a local proxy that you can run your browsers through that will strip ads and make sure your privacy is intact while surfing the net.

One neat thing about it is that it’s very configurable, and you can also specify extra header info to send. So, this gave me an idea .. why not just send one of my sites as referer.

With it’s 4.5 million inhabitants, 385639 sq. miles, and a resistance against continental drift, Norway is a land of great diversity. Wheter it’s due to the hilarious infinite access of oil or that the country itself being as far stretched as the last gin-tonic at 5 AM in the morning, there is no doubt in the presence of some genuine norwegian moods. Being in a cocktail mood, norwegians put themselves along with their behaviour patterns in a small box and ship it to Denmark. But if the streets are too moody, the average norwegian farmer tends to enjoy a casual bottle of traditional family moonshine. Chilled of course, by ice from a glacier troubled with heavy rain and german tourists. So, wheter it’s the fjords as deep as the prime ministers pockets on election day, or the colony of laplanders which eats anything as long as it is raindeer: If Norway was a person, it would be, without doubt, a strange fish indeed. I thought it said “colony of lapdancers” there at first, and started wondering where they would be. Of course, I prefer laplanders ;)

Amazon launches aStore (Beta, of course)

From their description:

If you do not know what they’re about the concept is pretty easy – they are personalized radio stations that you listen to via the web. Unlike traditional radio stations they have the ability to ‘learn’ what kind of music you like, based on what you tag as good music and what others with the same music taste as you enjoy.
The new way is to do it here, from “My Sites”. Yes, that means you will have to have registed your site there first. You’ll also have to agree that your “site has violated Google’s quality guidelines” and that you’ve made changes. It doesn’t take many pages before Guy introduces the reader to a brand new concept – when it comes to business; women know best.

Here’s an excerpt from the chapter called ‘Define Your Business Model’:

My final tip is that you ask women – and only women. My theory is that deep in the DNA of men is a “killer” gene. This gene expresses itself by making men want to kill people, animals and plants. To a large degree, society has repressed this gene; however, starting an organization whose purpose is to kill another organization is still socially acceptable. Hence, asking a man about a business model is useless because every business model looks good to someone with the Y chromosome. (…) Women, by contrast, don’t have this killer gene. Thus, they are much better judges of the viability of a business model than men are. He then argues that men must be dumber since they recieve more ‘Darwin Awards‘ (given to stupid people).

The Pirate Bay up and running again

Well, this is an interesting story to watch. If you haven’t lived under a rock the last couple of years, you’ve heard about the pirate bay, a search engine for .torrent files which (mostly) link to pirated material. May 31st the Swedish Police raided the hosting company where TPB was hosted, and shut down all the routers (not just TPB ones). Anyway, today – The Pirate Bay is back up – branded as “The Police Bay”, and with a fresh logo as well:

Google Web Toolkit

Just a short note, i found this today – Google Web Toolkit. It looks very promising and I’m just about to start experimenting with it (can’t wait!). It’s a framework for creating AJAX applications with the usual gmail look, but the fresh approach is that you write the application in Java – and then you compile to to Javascript/HTML when you’re ready to ship.

I’m don’t how well this development model works with dynamic data etc. but I’m sure they have a clever way to do that too. Will report more later when I’ve tested it :)

Wow, finally back in…

After being banned by Google for 7 months bie.no is finally back in the index. It must’ve helped sending those ‘reinclusion requests’.

One strange thing though – even though I have a robots.txt disallowing Google from indexing odp.php on my site they seem to have indexed it nonetheless.

Good the be back in – even though most people find this site using Yahoo! anyway – which has finally gotten the point and made a search portal that looks just like Google :)

Vitamin launched today!

I’ve been waiting for this; Vitamin by Carson Systems. It’s branded as “Vitamin is a resource for web designers, developers and entrepreneurs”, and I first heard about it in a podcast a while ago. I was so impressed by their lineup of ‘advisors’, that I actually spammed my own forum telling people to signup, before I really knew what it was all about. ;) That doesn’t happen often.

Anyhow, looks promising and their design is just .. well, pleasing. Makes me want to take some vitamins.

Spot the dinosaur

It’s from an article in The Economist about Microsoft and the new threat from emerging Web 2.0 products.I mean, who wants to use the calendar in Outlook, when Google Calendar was just released. In fact, who wants to use Outlook at all, with an online alternative such as GMail? And as for writing documents I, for one, prefer Writely over Word.

PEAR DataObjects vs. Propel vs. EzPDO vs .. Or, any project at all some would say. If you don’t know what I’m talking about, I’ll give you a quick example. Usually, in PHP we would do something ugly-bugly like this to retrieve info about a certain item in the database:

$res = mysql_query(“SELECT * FROM article WHERE ID=5”); if($row == mysql_fetch_assoc($res)) { echo $row[“title”]; // do something here } Compare it to this:

Characteristics of "Great Software Design"TM

This post is not about design-design, but the internal design of a software system. Such a design has several general characteristics, and Code Complete 2 has a list of these. First, a related quote by R. Buckminster Fuller:

“When I am working on a problem I never think about beauty. I think only how to solve the problem. But when I have finished, if the solution is not beautiful, I know it is wrong.” Great Software Design would have all these characteristics, but that’s almost never possible. Some of them contradict each other, so often we have to make tradeoffs. Anyway, here’s the list:

A guide for moving to Norway

Ok, I see this post is getting some traffic from Google on keywords such as ‘relocating to norway’, ‘moving to norway buying a house’, etc. etc. so before you start reading you should know that this article is a joke I published back in 2006. Ok, maybe it’s a little bit of truth in it. But it’s more of a rant than a serious guide. If you’re looking for something more serious you should probably try norway.no, a norwegian embassy like the (uk) one, or an american one. If you just plan on going as a tourist you should check out visitnorway.com. It’s not all positive, here are some paragraphs:

**As “open-source” models move beyond software into other businesses, their limitations are becoming apparent.**EVERY time internet users search on Google, shop at Amazon or trade on eBay, they rely on open-source software—products that are often built by volunteers and cost nothing to use. More than two-thirds of websites are hosted using Apache, an open-source product that trounces commercial rivals. Wikipedia, an online encyclopedia with around 2.6m entries in more than 120 languages, gets more visitors each day than the _New York Times’_s site, yet is created entirely by the public. There is even an open-source initiative to develop drugs to treat diseases in poor countries. (…) However, it is unclear how innovative and sustainable open source can ultimately be. The open-source method has vulnerabilities that must be overcome if it is to live up to its promise. For example, it lacks ways of ensuring quality and it is still working out better ways to handle intellectual property. (…) Its advantage is that anyone can contribute; the drawback is that sometimes just about anyone does. This leaves projects open to abuse, either by well-meaning dilettantes or intentional disrupters. Constant self-policing is required to ensure its quality. Then they go on to tell about the whole Wikipedia story.

PHP is the Devil!

I’m a big fan of podcasts, and recently I stumbled upon this jewel. It’s not a podcast per se, but eight audio files containing presentations from Carson Workshops entitled ‘The Future Of Web Apps’. I’ve listened to three of them by now, and here’s what I’ve learnt so far:

Joshua Schachter, Delicious [mp3]; Don’t write for scalability, you won’t know what breaks before it breaks. People will molest your server.

Cal Henderson, Flickr [mp3]; Write an API, use an open system; let users know that they can export their data if they don’t want to use your service anymore (it will get you more users!)

David Heinemeier Hansson, 37 signals and one of the developers behind Ruby On Rails [mp3]; Flexibility is overrated, and PHP is the Devil!

Great stuff! :) Can’t wait to listen to the next five. And since I’m going to Manchester this weekend (or, stoke-on-trent to be precise, but that’s almost Manchester isn’t it) there should be some travel time to listen to some of this :)r

Cutting the Gordian Knot

“Gordius, the King of Phrygia, once tied a knot that no one could untie. It was said that he who solved the riddle of the Gordian Knot would rule all of Asia. So along comes Alexander the Great, who chops the knot to bits with his sword. Just a little different interpretation of the requirements, that’s all… and he did end up ruling most of Asia.”

So begins chapter seven of one of my favourite programming books of all time.

Code checklists

The best things in life are free smart and simple! As code checklists for example. I’m currently reading Bob Walsh‘s recent book Mirco-ISV – From Vision To Reality, which is a book about running your own Micro-ISV (independent/internet software vendor). Micro-ISV’s are often one-man companies, for example single developers producing and selling their own software. Early in the book Walsh talks about ‘developing the Micro-ISV way’, and this is where he gets into code checklists:

The Java community retaliates – "PHP is …"

Ok, it’s time to let the people of #java on Ef-net let us know what they thought of PHP in the period from July to December 2005 (read: yes, I’ve done a grep -iH “php is” on my #java irclogs). Of course, we all know the PHP developers had strong opinions on Java, so this will be interesting.

< @Tenchi> php is terd < @aut> straight php is faster than using php to transform xml < waz> don’t forget “PHP is slow!” < pr3d4t0r> waz: “PHP is slow! Php is not something you program. < @jwzrd> deigo, php isn’t coding < @top^> a bunch of if statements? now that’s why php is not java < SouljaGoD> PHP is fairly easy for this kind of thing < mele> php is nice ;) < pr3d4t0r> kinabalu: PHP is like a gun. < mele> Tenchi: php is fun :) < @GnarlyBob> php is more scalable < eth-> you think PHP is understandable? hahaa < @boxed> you know, php is pretty much like java except with a chaotic standard library and a billion $’s thrown randomly in the code < jjava> but php is able to defy gravity < @jwzrd> hahaha php is such a configuration shithole < @jwzrd> PHP isn’t allowed < Jippi> i know – php5 got oop as a ‘bonus’ hehe.. php isnt orignally a oop language < @jwzrd> PHP is annoying though :) < CnfsdKid> php is forever horrible. < CnfsdKid> DeanC: php is retarded. < Number-6> php is quite retarded. < tonicxt> Php is nice as it has build in user-input sanitization automatically enabled on all user-input -=- < CnfsdKid> geerd: maybe php is more your style. < gripe> geerd: php is for semi-literate high school kids to write blogs with < porc> php is simply not an enterprise class language < geerd> and PHP is for the web, you dont listen for any keys Well, we see they have humor; “PHP is slow, use Perl” is of course a reference to the idiotic “Java is slow, C is better” which these developers hear too often. So, they throw it over to the PHP community, where it, of course, is just is stupid.

Why don't they come with 'Save as DocBook'?

It’s great with all these Web 2.0 applications with tools to help with all aspects of our life – like <a href="http://voo2do.com/" title="It's Voodoo! It’s basically a grep of all mentions of java in #php from July to December 2005.

The nicks have not been hidden to protect the guilty.

This is what the people in #php on ef-net think about Java as a programming language:

< Johnboyo> java is awful, im a symbian programmer by trade and i avoid it at all costs

< @feti> better than a low-level language. and java is high-level

< nforbes> LOL JAVA IS SLOW

< tWiZtEr> java is slow and gay

< dreamache> java is so unbelievably slow, i mean.. have you ever visited sites with java menus? my gawd

< vvortex3> C# vs Java is such a bitter debate

< SouLShocK> java is medium?

< @Dragnslcr> Java is one of the best languages for GUI apps. Not to say that it’s all that good

< paladin`> what phek is trying to get at is, php “executes” code serverside, whereas java is handled and interpreted by the client. what you are likely looking to do is to add a tag such as onload=”function();” to your html.

< m0O> da_ – programming java is nice thou :)- the funnest to program especially using hte eclipse interface, makes it even more fun

< Inkvenom> java is a resource whore…

< +ronny_fro> java istn drag and drop necessarily

< pulse__> if you’re looking for retards, #java is the place to go

< leterip> i hate how java is a programming lanugage becasue they use the guise of compiling

< Idle`> Java is… C# is MS’s java killer, although theyll never admit it

< planetxm> we all know java is a beautiful language for OOP.. and the fact they took c# syntax is no suprise coming from M$.. c# is like ‘the perfect language’

< badz> java is popular … you couldnt build a os out of it… c is just the real thing.

< Chr|s> but to say that Java is useless is a bit of a stretch

< kainam> java is ass

< @feti> hindog: because Java isn’t extensible, C/C++ are

< +dreamache> java is like so horribly slow

< slacker_> i know java is

< +SunTzu> god java is a resouce hog

< aonic> but java is a resource whore

< Chr|s> Java isnt that bad, depends on what you’re intended use is

< stutter-> Chr|s: i guess if your intended use is fat slow application – java is good

< @feti> i bet you guys couldn’t name one reason why objective C is better than Java. and if you can you’re an idiot, cause you use the tool for the job. and you probably don’t even know WHY java is used so much, let alone have room to talk why it sucks.

< @Dragnslcr> Java is a good language for a lot of stuff, but some of the things it does are really annoying

< fietronic> Dragnslcr: the thing with java is that it runs on most everything new

< phek> java is good as a non web based programming language

< el_taco> java is so portable.

< fietronic> m-00kie: java is a web application…

< Yaeyama> crayola: that’s because java is teh suck and the community would be up the creek without those kinds of submissions ;)

< +YorT> Rhasta, java isnt truly cross platform either :P

< Colloid> ok i don’t mean to spam, but i’m a java hater and this one is too good: “Saying that Java is nice because it works on all OS’s is like saying that anal sex is nice because it works on all genders”

< MovieTrai> Colloid, just because java is to hard for you doesn’t mean it sucks

< +dreamache> java is unbelievably slow

< sp0n9e> java is nothing but OO and some things are such a pain

< Two9A> And it’s probably more efficient because every array access in Java is automatically bound-checked

< +Shadda> and java is nothing but overflowing with documentation on OO design

< zenogais> Java isn’t helly-slow

< hindog> pretty fuckin sweet.. I use PHP + Java for my latest project, where java is the actual engine.. and php is the “front” to the engine

< hindog> h4x012, java is good.. .NET is good

< +SunTzu_> java is a hog

< Woxxy> SpydaByte: speed is relative. whereas c++ has better performance, java is faster to code

< Asmodeo|p> dunno your opinnion but i think java is gay

< @Shai-Tan> java is a mess

< _crayola> the only real java is java because its platform independent.

< @w0lfy> < ?php echo ‘java is gay kthx’; ?>

< codepoet> java is so damn annoying

< @horros> Java isn’t slow.

< +YorT> lod, you do realise java is fucken fast right?

< hindog> java is not interpreted at the source-code level

< segosa> java is not js

< Inkvenom> Shadda: do you think java is or isn’t a resource whore?

< Inkvenom> ron_frownZendar: do you disagree that java is a resource whore, it has it’s benefits, but you have to admit that

< +SunTzu_> im sick at thinking java is the way

< @Dragnslcr> Java is mostly OO, but it still has non-object basic data types (integers, reals, etc.)

< +feti> anybody that tries to relate PHP to Java is a complete idiot to begin with

< InkLaptop> java is a resource whore….

< putopaul> java is the best right now

< ftzdomino> writing servers in java is fun. hopefully they fixed all of the connect() timeout stupidity

< Meritt> because java is the devil.

< Meritt> PHP is an efficient scripting language modeled after C. Java is a cannabilistic ogre woman.

< nomopofom> java is like uber pro style?

< m0rales> java is huge but comparing java to php would get us nowhere

< m0O_> java is elite

< m0O_> java is elite!

< m0O_> .NEt/JAVA is slower I assume

< baloo_> java is meant for you, php is meant for us

< m0O_> so powerfull, java is in ur hands when programming

< Arrakis> java is just plain suckage

< Flixi> cdg: First it was in the html head. Not I copyed the java code to a other file and instead of the script tag I got < ? include menujava.php ?> and it’s the same java code both places.. I thought it would just copy the java code in to the html file because php is server side and the java is client side

< m0O_> Im in 4th year university, and java is sick :) We just handed in a EJB application yesterday, group of 5, 10 gorups in class, and only my groups finished it. And I was the only person in the group who did it , the rest did the report since they new shit

< @ronny_poo> I think in general java is a glimpse at where things are going, but theres just too much shit thats half assed in java frameworks

< _piker_> #java is worthless anyways’

< sp0n9e> java is ass :P

< @Shadda> java is great…when coded right

< +noc`> Java is good

< zid`> java is insecure shit on windows

< rza> java is actually good

< syc> java is nicer to work with. in my opinion.

< sp0n9e> java is more than a language

< syc> java is an addiction to platform independant code!

< SunTzu> java is cool just wish they would get the garbage collection sorted out :P

< Chr|s> Java is so much nicer in that regard… ;-P

< virax> digitok: All java is bullshit.

< syc> java is good.

< _m0O> still java is the ruler :)

< +noc`> and java is the OO king dammit

< _m0O> java is the king of OO

< _m0O> all I said is java is king

< sp0n9e> java is getting better at memory management

That’s it! Tomorrow we’ll have a look at what the #java people think of PHP. Fun, huh? :)

PHP Frameworks that I have on my to-checkout list

It’s exciting times for PHP. Quality frameworks are popping up like daisies mushrooms skunk cabbage, and it seems like every bob the builder out there is releasing one. Please leave a comment if you know of a framework I haven’t mentioned, or if you have experience with one in the list. For the project I’m doing at the moment I’m using Seagull, but there are so many good frameworks out there – and I’d like to test at least 3-4 of them by implementing a real-world project.

How to get the AJAX In Place Editor to use ISO-8859-1

When implementing script.aculo.us’ AJAX In Place Editor for a project I’m currently working on, I ran into some character encoding problems. My PHP framework uses ISO-8859-1, while the ajax script was submitting UTF-8 to my server. Reading the wiki documentation, I discovered that this was a ‘known feature’:

The form data is sent encoded in UTF-8 regardless of the page encoding. I was recommended to use iconv to convert back to ISO-8859-1 on the server. Unfortunately this was not an option for me, as it wasn’t available on the production server. Of course, there is PHP’s utf8_decode(), but anyone who has used it will tell you it is totally unreliable.

Debugging JavaScript with MS Visual Studio

There’s an ancient fable that tells of a frog that falls into a pail of milk. Unable to scramble out, the creature trashes around, seemingly drowning. Eventually however, his frantic struggles turn the milk into butter – and he hops away.

Until now, that fable has been a good metaphor of my struggle with the seven headed beast called JavaScript. I’ve written my lines of code, gotten inane script errors from IE, tried, failed and tried again. Also known, and forever hated, as trial and error programming.

Search engines the new bad, says Jakob

In his latest Alertbox column Jakob Nielsen (you know, the usability guru) writes:

I worry that search engines are sucking out too much of the Web’s value, acting as leeches on companies that create the very source materials the search engines index. He argues that people are using the search engines as ‘answer engines‘, and that they often do not visit the pages that create the content at all.

1 Way to Impress Your Friends

Or, 24 ways that is. If you’re were sleeping through december month, or maybe too busy handling your mother-in-law, you might have missed 24ways, the ajax/web2.0 advent calendar. The idea is simple; every day they would release a new ajax/web related article. The articles are written by different authors, who are probably considered experts in their field.

It recently struck me how ingenious this is from a marketing point of view. Releasing quality content like this, on a single site and on an pre-known schedule (in this case every day) – you’re bound to get dugg a lot. People also seem find it delicious, and it’s probably just a coincidence that this wasn’t “news for nerds, stuff that matters“.

Domain Listing Center Inc.

This is a first .. I’ve gotten lots of spam over the years, but this is the first “domain renewal”-like notice I’ve gotten from a false source. It’s got my domain name, in addition to the real domain registrant info (my name, address, etc.)..

It looks like a bill, an annual fee that needs to be paid. However, it does say in small letters:

THIS IS NOT A BILL. This is a solicitation. You are under no obligation to pay the amount(s) stated unless you accept this offer. This is obviously a scam attempt, and yes, I do feel I’m under an obligation — to find you. I’ll eat dinner and maybe I’ll feel better.

What's Sun thinking?

Most of the time I’m pretty proud to call myself a Java programmer. When people ask me what programming language I work with, I usually answer Java even though I’ve probably been doing more PHP5 than Java lately.

But every now and then I get a question from a client asking where he or she should download the latest version of the Java runtime. I wish I could offer them something else than java.com.

phpODP page refreshed!

I finally updated the design on the phpODP page. It looks so much better now – not strange, considering the old design was, well – old. And even when it was new it wasn’t all that great. I’ve been using it for quite a while, and have been kind of addicted to it. Since I haven’t yet set up my own server at home, I started looking around for SVN hosting – when I found this one which is free.

I just registered but it looks great so far. You can create a project with multiple users. If you do not want it to be an open project, you can disallow anonymous checkouts. In addition, connecting to the repository through SSL is possible. Good times.

How to get cheaper shipping with Amazon

When ordering from Amazon you get to choose between grouping items into as few shipments as possible, or shipping when the items become available. Of course, the first method (shipping all items in one shipment) is the cheapest – both for you and for Amazon.

Here’s how I was able to get the items shipped when available, without paying extra!

I ordered 9 books from Amazon on the 18th of October, and of course, being the cheapskate I am I selected the “one shipment” option:

The Google, The Bad and The Ugly

Going from a PR7 to nil I should know what it feels like to be the coolest kid in class one day, and the geek back in the corner the next. I’m glad my income doesn’t rely on Google traffic, cause if it did I’d be in it deep.

Here’s the story: I’ve created a script, called phpODP that lets people put the content of dmoz (the open directory project) on their own pages. This is perfectly fine according to the dmoz licence, and my script is even listen on dmoz itself. A lot of people have downloaded this script, and are currently using it.

Anger management

Recently I’ve started loading my MP3 player with podcasts that I listen to when I drive to and from work. This is an excellent replacement for mainstream radio; I can find podcasts discussing the topics I’m interested in, and use this ‘dead-time’ to learn something new. Also, the radio in my car doesn’t work. In addition, there is often a lot of traffic, so a quiet car can drive anyone mad.

Hipster PDA

I’m just flabbergasted! I’d never heard of teh Hipster PDA before today. Incidently, I came across the original introduction at 43Folders.

Merlin, over at 43Folders describe the Hipster PDA as:

The Hipster PDA (Parietal Disgorgement Aid) is a fully extensible system for coordinating incoming and outgoing data for any aspect of your life and work. It scales brilliantly, degrades gracefully, supports optional categories and “beaming,” and is configurable to an unlimited number of options. Best of all, the Hipster PDA fits into your hip pocket and costs practically nothing to purchase and maintain. In short; it’s nothing more than a fancy notebook. Or, just a notebook. That you can have in your back pocket. So, what’s the news?

About

My name is Bjørn Børresen and I’m a software developer based in Stavanger, Norway.
